Description

Bethel AME Church in Boston is seeking a Director of Communications & Culture to strengthen how the church communicates across every touchpoint — internal and external, digital and print, Sunday and weekday. This full-time hybrid role combines strategy and hands-on execution to ensure the church’s voice, messaging, and culture are communicated with clarity, consistency, and excellence.

The Director of Communications & Culture leads Bethel’s overall communications direction across platforms including weekly announcements, printed materials, email, web content, social media, Sunday Digital, and in-person communications. The role helps staff and ministry leaders communicate clearly, coordinates storytelling and message alignment, supports internal communication needs, and oversees the creation of written, visual, and creative content. This position also provides leadership to volunteer creatives and helps build a sustainable communication system for the church.

Bethel AME is a long-standing, mission-driven church with meaningful local, national, and global impact in faith, justice, and community leadership. This role plays a key part in how we share that mission with our congregation and the wider community.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience

  • 4+ years of experience in communications, marketing, media, or related fields

  • Strong writing, editing, and messaging skills

  • Experience supporting internal and external communication needs

  • Ability to manage multi-channel communications (email, print, Sunday announcements, presentations, social, web)

  • Experience coordinating or leading volunteers

  • Understanding of communication workflows including written, visual, print, and digital content

  • Strong project management and organization

  • Ability to work cross-functionally with pastors, ministry leaders, and staff

  • Familiarity with Planning Center, Mailchimp (or similar), Canva/Adobe Express, and basic CMS tools
