Home --> News --> News Release News Release: April 23, 2002A statement from the Rev. Dr. Diane C. Kessler, Executive Director of the
Massachusetts Council of Churches: “April is Child Abuse Prevention Month—a fitting time to respond legislatively to this critical social problem. The Massachusetts Council of Churches has worked closely with all parties concerned to develop the best possible law that makes clergy mandated reporters of child abuse, thereby helping to protect the safety of children and to support their well-being. We commend House and Senate leaders for working so painstakingly to develop the best possible bill. We trust that Acting Governor Swift will sign the bill as quickly as possible. We look forward to sharing information about the new law with denominations, clergy and congregations. Now it is time for the legislature, churches, and the public to turn our
attention to other issues that also impact children—specifically, a state
budget crisis that, unless responsibly resolved, could seriously hurt poor
children and children with special needs. We hope that these matters also
will receive vigorous scrutiny and support.”
