SAC HEALTH CARE PRIORITY FACT SHEET

Health care reform has been a long-term MCC public policy goal. For nearly a generation, the MCC has supported measures to reduce the high cost of health care. A position statement adopted in 1977 by the MCC Strategy and Action Commission entitled “The Church and health Care” makes a theological and ethical case for health care reform. (see text)

Today, the Strategy and Action Commission supports legislation that would establish “The Massachusetts Health Care Trust”. This would create a “single-payer” system and bring health care funding under one administrative umbrella to pave the way for fulfilling America’s greatest need: health care for all.

SINGLE-PAYER TALKING POINTS

  • Health care is a fundamental human right.
  • In a modern, wealthy nation like the U.S., affordable, accessible, quality health care should be available to all.
  • An effective way to achieve universal coverage and control costs is with a single-payer health care system.
