THE FORREST L. KNAPP ECUMENICAL AWARD

PURPOSE AND CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

The Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Council of Churches on September 27, 1977, approved the purpose and criteria for the selection of the recipient of the ecumenical award. The Nominating Committee is authorized to nominate a candidate for the award to the Board of Directors. The Board, upon receiving this nomination, may select the nominee, who will be honored at the annual meeting of the Council or other appropriate occasion. You are cordially invited to nominate candidates in accord with the following statement of purpose and list of criteria.

The purpose of the award is to stimulate interest and involvement in the ecumenical task - that is, making visible and effective the unity and mission of the Christian church - by honoring a person and/or institution who/which has contributed significantly to the advancement of ecumenism in Massachusetts.

Therefore:

  1. The award shall be reserved for recipients who have shown significant and specifically ecumenical involvements or achievements, rather than social, political, or financial contributions.
  2. The awardee can be an individual, group, and/or an institution.
  3. The ecumenical involvement and/or achievements of the awardee will have occurred in Massachusetts, though it is certainly conceivable that an eligible candidate could have made ecumenical contributions outside Massachusetts which have a significant influence in Massachusetts.
  4. The award may be given for a series of ecumenical involvements and achievements or as a single, dramatic act. Strong preference will be given to expressions of sustained commitment. A bill of particulars justifying the nomination shall be presented to the Board for its decision.
  5. The awardee should show a consistent breadth of ecumenical commitment and vision, not merely involvement in a single ecumenical enterprise.
  6. The awardee should exemplify the qualities of life necessary to achieve reconciliation among the Christian churches and within the human family.
  7. High public visibility or prominence shall not be a consideration in making the nomination.
  8. Normally, the award will be given to a contemporary, but the possibility of a posthumous award is not precluded.
  9. The names and supportive data concerning suggested candidates shall be solicited annually from denominational and ecumenical offices in the Commonwealth, as well as from members of the Council's Board of Directors. (Note: An invitation to nominate, including criteria and instructions, shall be distributed annually.)
